I always imagine the folk genre as a product of harsh winters: snow-covered cabins, fireplaces, steadfast evergreens in strong winds. Early dawns and limited sun. This, of course, is an absurd illusion. But for Colyn Cameron, who records under the moniker Wake Owl, perhaps his native British Columbia did have some effect on his sultry, folk-rock debut EP, Wild Country.
Standout single “Gold” starts quiet and desolate, the sound of a single acoustic guitar and Cameron’s voice ringing clear. Before long, simple percussion and keys come forth, filling out the song and turning this into a majestic effort. With the build, it’s as if the golden sun is rising on the horizon and Cameron is striving to take you on a journey closer to its warmth.
